Mission and vision of the Department of Human Genetics

The Department of Human Genetics conducts cutting edge research and offers an up-to-date educational curriculum within the areas of human genetics and genomics. We apply genetic and genomic, molecular and bioinformatics technologies to improve our understanding of human disorders, for the benefit of our patients and society as a whole. We put our clinical services and scientific knowhow at the disposal of our patients, by offering state of the art diagnostic and counselling facilities, and by offering potential prevention and/or treatment strategies. Within the field of human genetics, we reflect on the social, ethical and psychological impact of new scientific technologies and their potential clinical applications.

The department hosts a platform of technologies that support clinical and basic research groups locally, nationally as well as internationally. The presence of the three stakeholders KU Leuven, VIB (life sciences research institute) and the University Hospitals Leuven creates a unique environment enabling broad training in an inspiring and international context.
