Skills Training and Development
General
- Each PhD student can decide to attend a number of skills training and development modules depending on his/her individual needs and interests. The starting point is the personal competence profile which helps to identify the most relevant skills that have to be acquired or refined.
- The PhD student will compose a package of skills courses and workshops in close consultation with the promotor. They agree on the contents and volume of the package. The supplementary components are recorded in the doctoral portfolio, but they are not centrally supervised.
- Skills training and development are optional elements of the doctoral training with the exception of the 'Good Scientific Conduct' module which every PhD student should attend in the first year.
- The PhD student takes full responsibility for this part of the doctoral training.
- PhD students can also attend the VIB Research Training Course (VRTC) as part of their skills training and development. Individual VRTC events (see table below) are accepted as part of the training in Doctoral School Biomedical Sciences and can be listed in the doctoral portfolio.

Practical
- All courses are organized on a yearly base unless otherwise mentioned.
- The detailed programme and the registration module are available via Toledo (only for registered PhD students), unless otherwise indicated. For information and registration of VRTC training events, please visit the VIB web site.
- Registration is obligatory as the number of participants is limited for most courses.
- If a course is full and you still want to participate, please contact the Doctoral School of Biomedical Sciences for more information. (not for VIB Research Training Courses)
- Registration via Toledo opens one month before the start of the course. For time schedule of VRTC registration, see the VIB web site.
- Registration for our Skills trainings organised by the Doctoral School goes via Toledo (log on with your student number) - PhD Biomedical Sciences - Skills Development - Information and Registration
No show-policy
If due to unforeseen circumstances you are not able to attend the course or workshop you have registered for, please notify the doctoral school asap (phd@gbiomed.kuleuven.be or els.wellens@gbiomed.kuleuven.be). There may be a waiting list of other students who want to attend.
- In case of “no show” for any unexplained reason, you will be required to submit a letter of apology to the doctoral school. This letter should be signed by you and your promoter and addressed to the administrative coordinator of the doctoral school, Katleen Vercammen).
- In case of a second “no show” without notification, further registrations can be rejected.
