International Call PhD Students 2012

Leuven International Doctoral School Biomedical Sciences is looking for dynamic and motivated students with a keen interest in human health and disease, and with a passion for research. In exchange we offer you a challenging environment and an intense research experience leading to a PhD degree.

Successful applicants will perform doctoral research under the supervision of a promoter who is affiliated to one of the Doctoral School Programmes. In addition, PhD students will also follow a doctoral training programme that provides programme-based thematic education and stimulates the development of transferable skills.

PhD Positions Available in 2012

We have vacancies for up to 18 PhD positions! Please have a look at following webpages:

All positions are fully funded for 4 years.
It is possible to apply for maximum 2 projects!

Application Procedure

The deadline for application is January 31st, 2012!!!

Applications are invited from enthusiastic (under)graduates in any relevant biomedical area with an excellent study track record. Successful applicants must have obtained their Master's degree (or equivalent university degree) before taking up the PhD position.

Please read carefully the online application instructions and fill out the application form following the extra instructions below:

  • On the application form fill in following specific fields as indicated
    • Page 1 - Status: Doctoral Programme
    • Page 1 - Are you applying for a vacancy? Please give the exact vacancy number: International Call (this field is case sensitive)
    • Page 6 - Extracurricular record: Leave this field blank; describe your research experience in a separate document of at least half a page which you must upload as an attachment.
    • Page 7 - Additional information and motivation. Please give your motivation: Leave this field blank; describe your motivation in a separate document of at least half a page which you must upload as an attachment. State clearly why this project has your preference and why you consider yourself as a suitable candidate.
    • Upload following documents: curriculum vitae, copy of the identity page of your passport, copy of bachelor's/master's diplomas and transcripts (no need for certified hard copies at this stage), translation of diploma and transcripts (if available), motivation, relevant research experience, and English proficiency certificate (TOEFL - or IELTS-certificates if available).
  • Letter of recommendation
    • Ask a senior researcher/professor who can judge your potential as a future PhD student, to write a letter endorsing your application.
    • Download the recommendation form and forward it to your referee.
    • The referee should e-mail this recommendation letter directly to the promoter and Kristel Paulissen, subject: 'Int. Call - letter of recommendation - your name'
       

Important Remarks

  • Application forms will not be processed unless the promoter receives minimum 1 letter of recommendation.
  • It is only possible to apply for maximum 2 projects!

Timeline 2012

The timeline for selection and admission is:
January 31 Deadline for application
February Admission committee assesses applicants based on application form and letters of recommendation.
End of February Shortlisted candidates are invited for interviews in Leuven (or for Skype interviews).
March - April Interviews
Travel expenses for a maximum of 250 Euro will be reimbursed and a free two night accomodation is offered.
End of April Succesfull candidates will receive an offer of admission.
Candidates are expected to answer within 2 weeks.
October 1 Start of PhD (earlier or later start is possible)
