Cancer
Mission Statement
The Cancer programme welcomes PhD students with a strong interest in the broad field of cancer research. Cancer is a highly complex and multifactorial disease that requires a multidisciplinary research approach involving fundamental, translational and clinical aspects. At the K.U.Leuven and its associated University Hospital (UZ Leuven) more than 50 groups are focusing on one or more aspects of cancer research. The Leuven Cancer Institute (LKI) and its associated initiatives unite these various expertises to foster synergism and to enhance the visibility of the cancer research efforts in Leuven.
The mission of the Doctoral School for Biomedical Sciences Cancer programme is to train today’s young biomedical researchers showing a strong interest in cancer biology to become tomorrow’s successful researchers and oncologists. The training programme therefore exists of a mixture of interdisciplinary teaching activities related to cancer research and treatment, with additional focused as well as more general seminars and lectures. The combination of a broad basis and available expertise provides a unique opportunity to offer graduate students a forum to keep abreast of key developments in the broad field of cancer research. It is the
aim of this programme to provide a comprehensive view of the disease with a focus on filling in cross-disciplinary knowledge gaps.
