Mission of the Biomedical Sciences Group
Mission
The Biomedical Sciences Group of the KU Leuven aims to play a prominent role both at a national and international level based on its three academic responsibilities: research, teaching and service to society. In doing so it draws inspiration from the Christian tradition.
The Biomedical Sciences Group is in continuous dialogue with the University Hospital Leuven (UZ Leuven) and the Science, Engineering & Technology and Humanities & Social Sciences Groups.
The Group’s aim is to promote nationally and internationally competitive higher education and pioneering research with a wide impact. Together with UZ Leuven, we aim to create added value to all aspects of health care and health improvement, and with its societal responsibility in mind, to inform Belgian health policy.
The Executive Committee of the Biomedical Sciences Group coordinates, manages and facilitates the different tasks of research, teaching and service to society through a consensual model: faculties are responsible for the development and management of courses; departments are responsible for research within their own domains, and for providing teaching capacity to the faculties; and the Group provides specific supporting services for these tasks.

In designing its high quality education policy the Group places a premium on taking its responsibility seriously towards the current and future needs of society. The educational programmes challenge students to become creative and critical citizens who are ready to take up their responsibility in society.
Service to society
Together with UZ Leuven, the Group achieves high quality evidence-based medical care, with dedication to the patient and in rewarding interactions between all healthcare professionals. Together they lead the way in the development of both scientifically and socially sound healthcare. With this in mind, innovative social and health care models are designed to respond to the challenges our society is facing.
Missie
De groep Biomedische Wetenschappen (BMW) streeft naar excellentie bij de realisatie van haar drie universitaire kerntaken, onderzoek, onderwijs en dienstverlening, en wil daarbij op het nationale en internationale forum een prominente rol spelen. Ze betrekt hierbij haar christelijk-ethische vraagstelling.
De groep BMW werkt daarbij in continue en dynamische interactie met UZ Leuven en met de groepen Wetenschap & Technologie en Humane Wetenschappen.
De groep wil garant staan voor kwaliteitsvolle (inter)nationaal erkende opleidingen en voor baanbrekend onderzoek met brede uitstraling. Samen met UZ Leuven wil zij een meerwaarde realiseren in alle aspecten van de gezondheidszorg en gezondheidsbevordering. en haar maatschappelijke verantwoordelijkheid in het gezondheidsbeleid in België opnemen.
Het groepsbestuur BMW coördineert, stuurt en faciliteert, in een collegiaal model, de verschillende opdrachten van onderzoek, onderwijs en dienstverlening. Hiervoor organiseert de groep een aantal ondersteunende diensten. Aan de faculteiten is beleid en toezicht op onderwijs toevertrouwd, aan de departementen het onderzoek, en dit binnen hun specifieke kennis- en expertisedomeinen.

Onderzoek
De groep BMW verricht hoogstaand onderzoek. Daarbij worden de beschikbare middelen en de opportuniteiten van translationeel onderzoek en multidisciplinaire samenwerking optimaal benut met respect voor diversiteit in de verschillende onderzoeksdomeinen van de Biomedische Wetenschappen.
Onderwijs
De groep BMW biedt kwaliteitsvolle opleidingen aan en faciliteert internationalisering vanuit dit streven naar kwaliteit. Zij hecht bij de vormgeving van haar opleidingen veel belang aan het opnemen van maatschappelijke verantwoordelijkheid tegenover de huidige en toekomstige samenleving. Ze biedt op evidentie gebaseerde basiskennis aan, stimuleert zin voor creativiteit en relevante innovatie en geeft hierbij duidelijk een plaats aan ethische en maatschappelijke bezinning.
Maatschappelijke dienstverlening
De groep BMW bouwt samen met UZ Leuven aan hoogkwalitatieve medische zorg, gebaseerd op wetenschappelijke evidentie, met toewijding voor de patiënt en collegiale interactie tussen alle zorgverstrekkers. Samen willen ze een voortrekkersrol spelen in de vormgeving van wetenschappelijk gefundeerde, maatschappelijk verantwoorde gezondheidszorg en gezondheidsbevordering. Daartoe beogen ze het ontwikkelen van innovatieve zorg en zorgmodellen die een adequaat antwoord bieden op de uitdagingen waar de maatschappij op vlak van zorg voor staat.
